  • The Reds triggered his RB Leipzig release clause, believed to be €70m, before the deadline
  • Szoboszlai will wear jersey number 8 and has named a Liverpool legend as his inspiration

Liverpool’s new boy, Dominik Szoboszlai, will wear the iconic number 8 jersey after completing his move from RB Leipzig and has named the inspiration behind it.

The Reds are advancing in revamping their squad, particularly in the middle of the park, by adding the Hungarian midfielder and previously signing World Cup winner, Alexis Mac Allister.

This comes after Liverpool bade farewell to a host of midfield stars, including Naby Keita - who was also signed from Leipzig five years ago but failed to live up to expectations - former Arsenal midfielder, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and the legendary James Milner.

The Athletic reports that Liverpool triggered Szoboszlai’s release clause of €70 million, which was only available until the deadline day of June 30.

The Hungarian will reportedly sign a contract linking him to Anfield until June 2028.

Szoboszlai reveals Gerrard as inspiration

The Hungarian midfielder is not scared to step into big boots at Anfield after choosing jersey number 8, which was worn by his idol, the legendary Steven Gerrard.

He exclusively told LFC TV why he chose the jersey: “A lot of great players had this number, and also, I have a tattoo from Steven Gerrard, what he said - I don’t even remember when but before - so it was also a reason why.”

This Is Anfield revealed the former Leipzig midfielder has a quote by the Liverpool legend tattooed on his arm.

Gerrard once said: “Talent is a divine blessing, but without incredible will and humility, it is worth nothing.”

Why Mac Allister chose 10

Sports Brief also reported on why Mac Allister chose number 10, stating he did not want to wear the jersey number made legendary by Gerrard.

The Argentine instead chose number 10, which was worn by another legend in John Barnes and most recently, by Senegalese star, Sadio Mane.

Mac Allister saw his stock rise after starring for Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he provided an assist in the tournament final.
